Bad Kata Night

Purpose: To review training material found online and analyze it from perspective of traditional Okinawan Karate and Modern Self-Defense.  This training event is not about making fun of other styles, but about learning how to use online resources to further training.

Training Value:

  • To teach students critical thinking and analysis skills
  • To teach students that not everything found online is worthwhile knowledge
  • To allow students to see what other Kata and material is out there

Requirements:

  • Students must find the best “bad Kata” and download the files into an mp4 format
  • Videos may be brought on a flash drive or CD/DVD

Activities:

  • We will collectively review the Kata and analyze them for Bunkai possibilities
  • Kata will also be vetted for practicality, efficiency of movement, and versatility
  • This activities will reinforce the material students learn from the “Interpreting a Kata” lecture that is part of the Hoshin Kan Assistant Instructor / Leadership training
